The 2009 European Steel Design Award has been presented to an international audience in Barcelona on September 17th, 2009.
Award:
The European Steel design Awards are given by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork to encourage the creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction.
Project:
New extention of the Justice Palace origninally built in 1973 in weathering steel, this new facility encircles the old courthouse and provides a link between the existing buildings. It is organized as a square built on slender steel columns giving free access to the ground floor. Two 100 meters towers complete the scheme. This straightforward concept provides a spatial unity and a new dignity to this important European institution. The delicate use of materials, particularly of steel, gives a touch of lyrism to this consistent “collage”.
